French developer Blinksonic, known for its REAKTOR instruments, has released HOLODRIFT, a new granular and spectral synthesizer plugin for macOS and Windows. It combines a granular sampler with a real-time resynthesis engine, so any sound you load (a sample, a loop slice, a recording, or live input) can be stretched, blended, and then rebuilt partial by partial.
Eight granular engines and a "Journey" between them
HOLODRIFT has eight slots, and each one is a complete granular engine. Grains run from a few milliseconds up to a second long, and you can slow a sound down, freeze it, play it backwards, or scatter it into a cloud. An Autofill button loads all eight slots at random from a chosen category of the included library, which holds 1,360 samples laid out on a map by timbre.
The heart of the instrument is the Journey, a position that glides from slot to slot and crossfades one sound into the next. You can drive it by hand from an XY pad or the mod wheel, record your gesture as a loop of 1 to 16 bars, or let it move on its own by LFO, by timed weights, or one step per note.
A spectral engine that rebuilds the sound
Everything the sampler plays feeds a spectral engine that breaks the audio into partials and rebuilds it in real time. Between analysis and rebuild there are 15 spectral effects, including Freeze, Smooth, Fragment, Time Shuffle, Disperse, and a Scrambler that swaps partials' pitches. In Wave mode, each partial is replayed by a wavetable instead of a sine, with 21 built-in waveforms or any sample you drop in.
After that come eight more sections: pitch shift, a polyphonic spectral autotune with 24 scales, a 16-string resonator, a spectral delay with shimmer, two reverbs, a filter or three-band EQ, tape-style saturation, and an output stage with width and compression.
Built for playing, not just programming
Alongside the full editor, HOLODRIFT has a Macro view with eight assignable controls and a Tabletop view laid out like a hardware box, with a big preset knob, eight knobs, and twelve trigger faders. There's also a looper with a 16-pad slicer, an arpeggiator with 11 patterns, a chord mode, MIDI Learn, 265 automatable parameters, and 240 presets in 13 banks. It comes as both an instrument and an effect version, HOLODRIFT FX.
Formats, requirements, and price
- macOS 13 or later (Intel or Apple silicon): AU, VST3, CLAP, and standalone
- Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit, with the Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime): VST3, CLAP, and standalone
- Blinksonic recommends a fairly recent machine, such as an Apple M2 or M1 Pro Mac or a 12th-generation Intel Core i7 PC
HOLODRIFT normally costs €159. It's €119 with the code L4UNCH until October 30, 2026, and a demo is available. Find it on the official Blinksonic HOLODRIFT page.
Why it matters
Granular synths and spectral effects usually live in separate plugins. HOLODRIFT puts both in one signal path and adds performance views on top, which makes it an interesting option for sound designers, ambient and experimental producers, and anyone who wants to turn ordinary samples into evolving textures.
