Virtual-instrument platform Musio has released Musio Studio, a free music-writing app for macOS, Windows, and Linux. The DAW connects directly to more than 3,700 recorded instruments, so there's no separate sampler, host, or Kontakt to set up.

"Lots of people are making free DAWs, but this one comes with the instruments," said Michael Patti, founder of Musio.

Instruments built in

Musio Studio taps into 126 collections from developers including Cinesamples, ProjectSAM, Soundiron, and Audio Ollie. Sounds download in the background, and you can search by name or by feel. A free account includes 21 sounds, with free collections such as CineSymphony, Session Piano Upright, Vintage Drum Machine: LinnDrum, Vintage Synthesizer: Prophet 5, and Handbells.

Key features

  • Seven starting templates, plus articulation switching by click or keyswitch.
  • Drawn dynamics and expression, and playing from your computer keyboard.
  • Room settings (Room, Studio, Hall, Cathedral) and EQ, Echo, Chorus, Drive, and Filter effects with 63 presets.
  • Mastering with loudness targets: streaming (-14 LUFS), Apple Music (-16), TV (-24), and Loud (-10), plus a compressor, de-esser, and limiter.
  • Score to picture, with video synced by timecode, hit marks, streamers, and punches; it sends and follows MIDI Timecode.
  • Up to 512 tracks, using every CPU core.
  • MIDI import, MIDI and audio recording with count-in, and export to WAV, MP3, stems, MIDI, and video.

A Musio plugin is included for other DAWs: AU, VST3, and AAX on Mac; VST3 and AAX on Windows; and VST3 on Linux for hosts like Reaper, Bitwig, and Ardour. One installer covers both the app and plugin.

Built-in MCP server

An included MCP server lets you connect your own agent (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) to load sounds, build templates, set up tracks, and shape articulations. It's off by default (Settings > Agents), runs only on your computer, requires a token, and each agent change is a single Undo step. Musio says Studio itself does not and cannot generate music.

System requirements

  • macOS 11 or later (Apple Silicon or Intel)
  • Windows 10 or later, 64-bit
  • Linux: 64-bit distributions from 2020 or later (Ubuntu 20.04+, Debian 11+, Fedora 32+, Arch); Intel/AMD only, not Arm
  • 8 GB RAM (16 GB recommended); SSD recommended

Price and availability

Musio Studio is available now as a free download from musio.com. Downloading doesn't require an account; signing in requires a free account. The full catalog is available through Musio Complete at $179/year or $25/month.

Why it matters

Free DAWs are common, but many leave you to source and host your own instruments. Musio Studio bundles the instruments with the app, plus score-to-picture and mastering tools, making it an easy starting point for composers, including those on Linux.
