Steinberg released Cubase 16 on November 4, 2026. The update adds Instrument Stacks, improved stem separation, new MIDI editing tools, a redesigned Settings workspace, and a new Tempo Detection workflow. It comes in three editions: Pro, Artist, and Elements.
"Many of the improvements in this release are directly inspired by feedback from our community," said Matthias Quellmann, Senior Marketing Manager at Steinberg.
Instrument Stacks
Instrument Stacks (Pro and Artist) combine multiple VST instruments, Sampler Tracks, and Drum Tracks into one stack played from a single track. Each layer has its own key and velocity ranges and transposition, without complicated MIDI routing. Stacks can be saved as presets.
Editing and audio
- Stem Separation (Pro) now uses the latest technology from zplane and splits audio into six stems: vocals, drums, bass, piano, guitar, and other.
- Strum in the Key Editor adds timing variation to chords, from subtle to fully strummed.
- Stretch Selection stretches or compresses MIDI notes directly, including ritardandos and accelerandos, without changing the project tempo.
- Tempo Detection has a new algorithm and fewer steps, and works on recordings made without a click.
- Spectral AudioWarp (Pro) adds new time-stretching and pitch-shifting modes built for extreme settings.
- A Lyrics lane in the Key Editor lets you enter lyrics alongside MIDI notes.
New instruments, effects, and sounds
- Omnivocal Basic is a vocal synth with two voicebanks, powered by Yamaha's Omnivocal NX engine.
- DrumChain (Pro and Artist) is a drum multi-effects processor with 42 presets.
- VocalTouch is a vocal processor with 30 presets covering 15 vocal styles.
- Module (Pro and Artist) is a HALion Sonic library with more than 200 FM presets.
- Five sample packs made with Wavetick: Afro House, Beats & Breaks, K-Pop, Latin Vibes, and Organic Sessions.
- Waves Illugen integration lets you generate samples and import them into a project. Cubase 16 users get a two-month Illugen subscription voucher.
Workflow and compatibility
The Settings workspace now brings preferences, key commands, project setup, and audio connections into one searchable, non-modal window. Cubase Pro now supports up to 16 audio sends per channel, up from eight, and Control Room cue sends go from four to eight. Other additions include Ableton Link, expanded MIDI 2.0 support, Windows MIDI Services on Windows 11 (version 25H2 or later), M4A and AAC import, a redesigned Pool, Quick Help, a Guided Tour, and a longer ASIO-Guard buffer of up to 280 ms.
Price and availability
Cubase 16 is available now from Steinberg and retailers. Prices are:
- Cubase Pro 16: $599.99 / €599
- Cubase Artist 16: $299.99 / €299
- Cubase Elements 16: $99.99 / €99
Updates, upgrades, crossgrades, and education versions are also available. Customers who activated Cubase Pro 15, Artist 15, Elements 15, or an earlier version of those editions, on or after October 7, 2026 qualify for a free update to the matching Cubase 16 edition. The grace period covers full retail and education licenses, updates, and upgrades.
Why it matters
Cubase 16 is a broad, practical update rather than an overhaul. Instrument Stacks remove a routing chore, six-stem separation now handles piano and guitar, and the Key Editor additions help with programming chords and timing.
